Meet the Candidates

Hunter Erwine
A Sherman Park resident, I have lived in Milwaukee County for two decades. Together, with my son Easton, we are active members of our community. We have been members of Highland Community School for the last school year and look forward to enjoying many years to come as he enters K3 for the 2025-26 school year. I am often found out in my community planting gardens, volunteering my time for community projects or simply enjoying Milwaukee’s gorgeous outdoor spaces. I was a member of the Sherman Park Neighborhood Tree Board for three years where I offered my experience and time serving my community and working to transform green spaces in the neighborhood. I am currently employed at a public school working with children with disabilities which fills me with a great passion and purpose to be a voice for others. I have been highlighted in my current position as someone who is highly flexible, able to problem solve quickly and efficiently and someone who carries a caring attitude. I often aspire to be a voice for positive change in my community, looking to see where I can add a fresh perspective or be of service to others. Serving on the Parent Board of Directors would offer me a unique position to be a voice for the children, like my son, who attend Highland. It would present me with new opportunities for learning and growth and allow me to be the positive voice for the community that I aspire to be.

Suave Kyles
I am Suavè Kyles, parent of two amazing daughters that attend Highland. In the Fall of 2025, Elani will be a fourth grader in Ms. Megan class. Eliza will be entering children’s house but we have not received her placement information as of yet. I am currently a Registered Nurse with a speciality in hospice. I recently decided to return to school to obtain my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate as I have a strong passion for psych as well. When I’m not being the busy afterschool school mom that many know me to be, I enjoy spending time in nature (walks, boat rides, sitting by waterfalls and reading). I’m an active parent in the highland community. Whether it’s being a field trip chaperone, a Girl Scout helping hand and troop captain or signing up for activities to earn parent hours. I would like to serve to the board to be more involved with the community but within the background leadership that continues to foster a healthy and thriving environment for highland students, families and staff. In addition, being a board member would increase networking opportunities with other parents in the highland community and enhance my leadership skills.

Lakita Wells
Lakita Wells is the Behavior Liaison for Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). Lakita holds a B.S. in Psychology. Over the past 15 years, Lakita has served in various positions within the MPS, and having worked in different capacities for the district has afforded her to gain a solid skill-set. For example, Lakita has demonstrated the capacity to: build programming; inspire positive growth through strategic planning; promote restorative practices; and navigate resources throughout the community. As a proud mom of a forthcoming K5 student, Lakita has expressed the following about her child’s experience with one of the most promising schools, Highland Community: “It has been so exciting to see the growth in my beautiful daughter Lavinia. She has had some of the most amazing teachers at Highland. There are gifted teachers who have a unique way of incorporating the concepts of
Montessori. Educators who are willing to meet each student where they are as the students gain confidence in their educational development and growth.” Highland has not only created a welcoming learning environment but a family who cares! Lakita believes prioritizing every student’s growth potential is critical—as each year builds upon the next. Lakita says she recognizes wonderful things happening at Highland Community School and it is her goal to always help bridge the gap for those who may not have support. Her hope is to push forward the goals that positively impact ALL students.
Nellie Wald
I am a Highland Community-School alumni and I feel very passionate about Highland and montessori education. Both of my parents were montessori teachers and I also went to MATC for early childhood education. I would love to serve Highland community school in any capacity. I am very interested in parent board and would love the opportunity to contribute. Why do you want to serve on the Board? Because I am Highland Community-School alumni and raised by montessori teachers and would love to contribute to Highland.

Tatiana Brooms
My name is Tatiana Brooms and I am the mother of Taylen, a K-4 student in Ms. Donna’s class. I am also currently raising three of my cousins (ages 10, 11, and 12). I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and relocated to Milwaukee, WI in 2009. I enjoy being a part of the Milwaukee community and more specifically, the Highland community. I currently work for The Parenting Network where I facilitate parent education and support programming, provide community outreach, and serve as a connector between parents and the resources in our community. While I love my job and serving my community, my real heart is in my job as a mom to my loving son Taylen. From the moment that Taylen stepped foot in Highland’s doors during his K-3 tour, he (and I) were amazed by the environment here. The feeling that you get when you truly get to experience Highland is like no other. From Taylen’s first day, Highland (and it’s staff) has welcomed Taylen and our family with open arms. We have loved participating in Grandparents Day annually and I wear my Highland gear proudly, wherever I go. I always enter any space with a smile, greeting and a positive attitude. I am a very hands- on and involved parent with my son and I am eager to be more involved in the Highland community by serving on the Highland Board of Directors. I am ready and excited to take on an even bigger role within the Highland community.

Benjamin Correia-Harker
As a parent of two children at Highland Community School, I am invested in educational experiences that will prepare all Highland children for fulfilling lives. Schools can be places for profound transformation, and I believe in the community of educators at Highland who provide the care, guidance, and encouragement that help our children engage in such transformative change. Being raised by parents who were deeply involved in public education (one as a school district comptroller and one as a K-6 PE and health teacher), I value the ways public education supports our communities and broader society. As a parent and educator, I strive to live in the tensions of various competing values – structure and freedom; support and challenge; diversity and communal identity. Professionally, I am also an educator at Marquette University where I focus on youth leadership development for a more just world. This emphasis in my work helps me to understand pathways for young ones to engage in meaningful change in their communities. At the same time, it challenges me to identify ways that I can spark and support positive change through my work in communities. My hope is that I can use my past experiences in higher education, leadership development, and non-profit board work as well as my identities as a gay parent in a multi-racial family to illuminate new perspectives, serve in thought partnership with the board and school community, and advocate for sound decisions that bolster Highland’s work.

Katie Mathis
As a mother to three lovely children, all who currently attend Highland, I seek the opportunity to join HCS parent board of directors. Parenting three children, in three different classrooms, (4th, 2nd and K4 next Fall) has allowed me to build relationships with so many of the families and staff in this community. Many of these individuals have encouraged me to run for a board seat and I’m thankful to have their support! For 13 years I managed a small neighborhood grocery store in Bayview called Groppi’s Market. And when I say managed, I mean I did everything: waiting on customers, ordering products, bookkeeping, invoicing, stocking shelves and setting margins and pricing, you name it! It was hard work, but I loved getting to know the customers and serving the neighborhood. Since having children, I stepped back from management and recently became a stay-at-home mom. This has allowed me to increase my involvement at HCS over the last few years, including co-leading a Girl Scout Troop and being a room parent (aka Sign-Up Genius Expert!) I love being available to lend a hand in the classrooms or in extracurricular activities. I love getting to know the other families and children attending this school, and seeing my kids build those relationships as well. It has been such a joy being so involved with my children’s growth and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them, and all the kids at HCS! Outside of my normal day-to-day, I spend much of my time working hard to restore our historic home in Washington Heights with big projects like painting the exterior and endless interior projects too. It would be an honor to serve on Highland’s board. I would like to provide a more direct impact on my children’s education. Just like you, I have a vested interest in the success of the students and this school! I have the time to be more involved and this is where my passion is!
