All Day Care

At Highland, we understand that families have unique schedules, so we have developed a series of Before and After School options for families to choose from. Below is a brief overview of what we offer. For inquiries, reach out to our Executive Director, twilliams@hcsmke.org.

Please see the Highland Community School’s Program Handbook – 2025-2026 for more detailed information about policies, billing and payments, and other helpful information for families.

Wraparound Care Registration Update (Before & After School Programs)

We are making an important update to how families register for before and after school care for the upcoming school year.

What’s Changing?

Due to increasing demand and limited paid program capacity, registration will move from a first-come, first-served model to a lottery-based system.

In past years, registration often filled within minutes, creating a stressful “race against the clock” for families. Our goal with this change is to create a process that is:

  • More equitable
  • Less stressful
  • More accessible for all families, regardless of schedule or availability at the moment registration opens

Availability

Last year, after all registrations were processed by the first day of school 86% of families were accommodated.

Timeline

  • Lottery Entry Opens: Monday, May 4 at 9:00 am
  • Lottery Entry Closes: Sunday, May 10 at 11:59 pm
  • Lottery Draw & Family Notification: By May 22

Please note:

  • This process is separate from school registration
  • Additional steps (including deposit submission) will follow after lottery results are shared

We understand this is a change from past practice. This updated system is intended to create a more predictable process for all families, especially given the high demand for limited paid program spots. We also want to ensure families have enough time to make arrangements if they are waitlisted for wrap around programming.

How the Lottery Works

Step 1: Submit a Lottery Entry (One per Family)

Families will complete a short form between May 4 – May 10 indicating:

  • Parent/guardian contact information
  • Children needing care
  • Program selection (before school, after school, K3 wrap around)
  • Preference options if applicable

The form will be live on our website and will be open only from May 4 – May 10.

Step 2: Lottery Process

  • Each family is entered once, and a random lottery number is assigned
  • The lottery is conducted by program (before care and after care separately)

As each family is selected:

  • We will attempt to place all children in that family in their selected program(s)
  • Placement is based on available space in the selected program(s)

Step 3: Waitlist

  • Once programs reach capacity, remaining families will be placed on a waitlist
  • Waitlist order is determined by the same randomized lottery process
  • Openings during the year will be filled from the waitlist in order

Registration After the Lottery

Families who are offered placement will receive registration information during the summer, coinciding with our standard school registration process. A deposit will be due at this time to hold your seat.

Important: Failure to complete registration and submit the deposit by the deadline will result in the spot being offered to the next family on the waitlist. Please watch your emails for this important communication.

Your child’s seat is not confirmed until your deposit has been paid. Once your form is complete, you will be required to pay your deposit in ProCare (half of your first month of fees) the same day you register in order to secure your child’s seat.
  • Click here to login to your procare online account or login to the Procare app on your phone to pay your deposit. Program fees have not been posted to your account yet, but your deposit must still be made even though it may say that you have a zero balance.
  • Click here  if you need to register another child for programs.
  • Click here if you need to put your child on the waitlist for a program that is full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does submitting the form earlier increase my chances?

No. As long as you submit your lottery entry between May 4–May 10, your chances are the same.

Will siblings be kept together?

We will make every effort to place siblings together. Because placement depends on available space, this cannot be guaranteed in all cases—but the lottery is designed to prioritize family groupings whenever possible.

What if I only need certain days?

You will be able to indicate your program needs during registration. Partial-week enrollment is available for the after school program only.

Because space is limited, most spots are reserved for full-week care. A small number of seat share spots will be available for families needing select days (M W F or T Th), with priority given to combinations that together cover a full week.

What if my child is placed on the waitlist?

Waitlists are created in lottery order. If a spot becomes available, families will be contacted in that order.

Do new students (including K3) need to complete the lottery?

Yes. All K3-8 families—including incoming K3 students and those moving to K3 from toddlers—must complete the lottery entry form to be considered. While we have seats available in our K3 wrap around program (11:30-3:30) for all accepted K3 students, seats in after school are limited.

*Families staying in the toddler program for the 2026-2027 school year do not need to complete the lottery form. Toddler families will complete an updated contract in August.

When will I need to pay?

Deposits will be required during summer, coinciding with our normal school registration process which is typically in late July/early August. More details will be provided via email at that time. Deposits will be required to confirm your seat for the upcoming school year.

Before School

7:00am – 8:30am

Before the school day starts, children in our Before School Program can play games, read, and hang out with their friends in a nuturing, supportive environment. All Before School children are offered an optional free breakfast in the gym starting at 7:45 am.

Afterschool

3:30 pm – 6:00 pm

All children participating in our After School Programs will start their time off with an after school snack to be followed by outdoor time, art activities, group games, and more! Our after-school programs are modeled to complement the Montessori classroom experience. Children choose materials or “work” off shelves in a similar way they do in their classrooms. Likewise, elementary groups are in mixed-age setting, which mirrors their experience during the school day.
